Youngsters have eyes on the future
CONGRATULATIONS to pupils at Baldragon Academy who made the semi-finals of a national inventors competition, designed for young people to create and develop tech solutions for the major challenges of the world.
The group of pupils came up with Dundee Discover AI, an app that connects to zero emission driverless buses which help people move around the city while minimising their environmental impact.
These young people are the products of generations of abuse to the planet and see the world through fresh eyes and a can-do attitude that things can – and must – change.
Competitions like this can change the lives of young people – for what’s to stop any of these semi-finalists being boosted by their success and following it up with a career after school?
The ultimate prize is a colossal £25,000 for the winning project, but I’d love to see investment for great young minds whether through further education or apprenticeships to challenge the destructive things most of us are still doing on a daily basis.
Who is going to join the race of achievers to create an alternative to plastic that is ecofriendly and won’t kill our sea creatures?
I’m fed up of plastic wrapping on everything from kids’ toys to food, sweets and internet deliveries.
People like the Baldragon group should know how important their work is, and potentially – should they and others like them continue – life and world-changing.
