Police attend after bus stop ‘robbery’

- BY JAMES SIMPSON

ONLOOKERS were shocked as a woman was reportedly robbed at a bus shelter near a primary school.

The incident happened at around 5pm yesterday near the junction with Baffin Street and Arbroath Road.

A stunned bystander described seeing two woman “struggling” with each other near Glebelands Primary before a handbag was reportedly taken.

The suspect was then seen running away towards South Baffin Street.

The man said he was “shocked” by the events that unfolded.

He said: “Both women were on the road at one point on the Arbroath Road.

“My immediate concern was one of them was going to get hit by a car.

“One of the women dropped an item of clothing and I went back and picked it up and gave it to one of them. To me it looked like they knew each other and I was about to cross back over towards Baxter Park.

“The next thing I saw was the two of them struggling and grappling each other.

“I was away to go and split it up before one of the women fled down Baffin Street.

“I couldn’t believe what was happening.”

The local resident said he dialled 999 after the other woman advised she’d been robbed.

He added: “She was visibly distressed.

“I asked her what had been taken and she said medication and cigarettes amongst other items in a handbag.

“To the police’s credit they were here really quickly and took statements while one police vehicle circled the area.

“Myself and the victim both believe the woman brazenly came back up Baffin Street before going up Morgan Street.

“We couldn’t see any bag as such on her and we thought it would be better to wait for the police.”

Police Scotland have been approached for comment.
