Doctor’s trial told of alleged attack

- BY CONNOR GORDON

A WOMAN has claimed she “froze” and later broke down after an alleged sex attack by an Angus doctor.

The 26-year-old said she was inappropriately touched during an examination by Matthew Adam.

The 36-year-old doctor denies sexually assaulting the woman at a medical centre in Angus on January 12 2015, as well as a 47-year-old woman on December 6 the same year.

The witness yesterday told the trial at the High Court in Glasgow she went to the doctor complaining of stomach cramps.

She alleged Adam examined her chest and ribs by “prodding” the areas.

The woman – testifying via video-link – added: “He just moved further down and got lower to my belly button and I started to feel uncomfortable.”

She then stated that Adam moved his hand under her trousers where he rubbed and prodded her for “a couple of seconds.”

Prosecutor Lindsey Dalziel asked how she reacted.

The woman said: “I didn’t say anything, my body just kind of froze.

“I just felt very uncomfortable and I thought that he would have seen that in me.”

The woman then claimed Adam pushed his groin against her leg or arm.

She said: “I looked to see what he was doing and I was shocked with what I saw.

“I saw that he was aroused in some way.”

The woman stated she was later given medication by Adam but did not listen to his instructions as she was “shocked and trying to hold it together”.

She stated she went into her partner’s car and was upset while telling him.

The woman claimed they made a complaint to the medical centre’s manager but did not contact the police.

She recalled: “Through the hyper-ventilating and crying, I told her.

“I told her I had been examined and that it was very uncomfortable.”

Asked during questioning about going to the police, she added: “I battled with myself whether or not to do it.

“I was at university at the time doing my dissertation and there was a lot going on.”

The police later contacted the woman and her partner and they made a statement.

The other woman in the case claimed on Wednesday that she had been attacked by Adam during an examination at her home.

The trial continues.
