Slasher jailed for knifepoint attack

A DUNDEE couple praised for their vocal support of Andy Murray during a match in Australia scooped free tickets to his quarter final thanks to the tennis star’s mum.

Boisterous Steven Glennie and Jodie Maggs were even given a shout-out by Dunblane-born Murray during a post-match interview broadcast live on television.

With the pair in the crowd at the quarter final, Murray joked: “If anyone wants tickets to my matches, turn up with a Scottish flag and maybe my mum might offer a few tickets.”

The camera then panned round to show the couple celebratin­g.

It came after Judy Murray had spotted Mr Glennie and Ms Maggs on TV during her son’s round of 16

A DUNDEE slasher will serve a year and a half in prison for striking a man on the neck with a knife in a city multi.

Barry McGhee, 47, of Bonnybank Court, Dundee, had been accused of stealing a watch during a rowdy gathering in Dudhope Court on April 18 2020.

During a “scuffle”, he produced a knife and lashed out at his victim, Darren Binnie, cutting his neck.

He cut another man, Christophe­r Walker, on the face with the blade.

A second accused, Colin Henderson, 55, was jailed by Sheriff Paul Brown for nine months for his part in the fight.

Dundee Sheriff Court previously heard how McGhee met Mr Binnie, Mr Walker and others in the city centre while under the influence of alcohol and drugs. victory over second-seed Nikoloz Basilashvi­li at the Sydney Internatio­nal on Wednesday.

She got to work tracing the couple and tweeted that she would “like to invite them to the quarter final”.

Within minutes, a friend offered to pass on contact details and Mr Glennie’s mum Sandra Davidson even created an account on the social media platform so she could respond.

Speaking before the quarter final, the couple, who now live in Australia’s biggest city, told Gary Robertson on BBC’s Good Morning Scotland radio show that they did not realise anything had happened until hours later.

Ms Maggs said: “It actually ended up being quite a late night because we didn’t get home until 1am.

The group returned to a flat in Dudhope Court, where McGhee was accused of stealing a watch.

Fiscal depute Marie Lyons told the court: “The accused McGhee had left but later that evening was asked to return to resolve the matter.

“He attended along with Colin Henderson and they were allowed in.

“Barry McGhee was challenged about the watch and became aggressive.

“A scuffle broke out with the witness Binnie and the accused produced a knife and lashed out, causing a cut to his neck.”

McGhee was heard to shout: “I’ll take your eyes out, I’ll murder you” during the incident.

The court heard how McGhee continued to wildly lash out with the knife before lunging at Mr Walker and slashing him to the left side of his face and eyebrow.

“We’d have a couple of drinks last night so we ended up sleeping a bit later than usual.

“At about 9.30am we both woke up and our phones had just blown up on Instagram and Facebook. Everyone was tagging us.”

Fans praised Judy Murray for her generosity on Twitter.

One wrote: “Brilliant, this story cheered me up no end this morning.”

Actress Leah MacRae tweeted: “Yesss!!! ’Mon the Twitter. I hope they have the most amazing time x.”

And comedian Matt Forde simply posted: “BRILLIANT!”

Murray won the first set of the quarter final 6-2 before he was handed victory when 8th seed David Goffin retired injured.

McGhee was punched several times by Mr Walker and narrowly avoided slashing his groin after the knife pierced through the front of his joggers.

McGhee and Henderson left the flat but returned the next morning and confronted the men again.

Henderson was in possession of two wooden sticks and claimed to be a martial arts expert while McGhee waved around a mallet.

Police soon caught up with the pair and arrested them.

McGhee pled guilty to repeatedly striking Mr Binnie on the neck with a knife and threatenin­g to kill him.

He repeatedly struck Mr Walker on the head and body with a knife.

On April 19, McGhee shouted, swore, brandished a mallet, made threats of violence and struck a door with the mallet.

Henderson, of Dallfield Court, admitted possessing and waving wooden bats.
