Lochee strain at leash but Shields stays wary

- BY JUNICUS

MOST clubs got an extra week’s break last Saturday with only two games going ahead, but hopefully it will be back to normal service tomorrow with a full programme.

One manager who is desperate to see some action again is Lochee United’s George Shields.

The Bluebells have played three games less than leaders East Craigie and Shields wants to keep the pressure on the Shipbuilders by picking up three points against Forfar United at Thomson Park.

United were comfortable 5-1 winners when they last met but despite having a full pool available Shields isn’t expecting an easy victory.

“Forfar United always make it a competitive game and I don’t see much difference on Saturday, so we will have to be focused and concentrate on getting the win,” said the Lochee gaffer.

Meanwhile, East Craigie will be looking to pick up three points at Glenesk and at the same time add to Violet’s run of defeats.

The Shipbuilders were 3-0 winners when they last met and will be favourites to complete the double.

In fairness to Violet boss Andy Heggie he has had to contend with a host of injuries and suspensions which has hampered his selection but there is light at the end of the tunnel and he should be in a better position team-wise this week.

Craigie will be without the suspended Rory Faulkner but otherwise have a full squad available.

Carnoustie were down to the bare bones for last week’s clash with Scone Thistle and while things have improved manager Phil McGuire delays naming his squad for tomorrow’s trip to Downfield.

Although the Gowfers won 2-0 when they met at Laing Park this could be a potentially tricky match for the Angus side.

You never know quite what to expect from Downfield and it is this unpredictability which makes them dangerous opponents.

Lewis Toshney could make his long-awaited debut but they will be without the suspended Corey Gray.

One of the most attractive fixtures is at Whitton Park where Broughty Athletic play hosts to North End.

Games between the sides are generally close. It was 1-1 when they last met, with the Fed coming from behind to snatch a draw thanks to a late equaliser by Graham Hay.

Broughty are on the fringe of the title race but anything less than a win would all but end their hopes of mounting a serious challenge.

Both managers will make late selections.
