‘No remorse’ shown for emergency at nursery
A nursery was evacuated after a worker burnt a Pot Noodle and lied about it.
Holly Wilkie was given a warning by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) after she tried to hide the melted tub at The Wendy House in Perth.
The SSSC said Ms Wilkie “acted dishonestly” and has “shown no insight or remorse” after the emergency on October 6 last year.
Children were woken from naps and evacuated, and fire crews called after the microwave incident.
The watchdog found Ms Wilkie tried to lie about triggering the alarm by hiding the burned Pot Noodle in her handbag.
She later came clean. In its decision, the watchdog listed no factors in favour of Ms Wilkie.
It said: “You have acted dishonestly. You tried to conceal the truth that you had caused the fire alarm to sound by using the microwave from your employer.
“Social service workers must be truthful, open, honest and trustworthy.
“They should communicate in an appropriate, open, accurate and straightforward way.
“They should not place themselves or other people at unnecessary risk.
“Although your behaviour is not at the highest end of the scale in terms of seriousness, you have shown no insight or remorse.
“You have
failed
to accept responsibility for your actions and given varying accounts of what happened.
“This in our view, increases the risk of repetition of dishonesty.
“Your conduct falls short of the standards expected from a social services worker.”
The Wendy House was contacted for comment.
