Canter carries on approach

-

ENGLAND’S Laurie Canter plans to continue with a more aggressive approach as he seeks his first DP World Tour title at a venue where he has tasted success twice before.

Canter earned his Tour card at PGA Catalunya in both 2015 and 2016 and is a big fan of the Stadium Course which hosts this week’s Catalunya Championship.

“The whole venue is amazing,” the world No 114 said.

“I remember the first time I came here. I had been playing on t he EuroPro Tour. I don’t mean this disrespectfully at all, but to go from that venue and set up and course condition to out here was a big jump.

“Even playing nine holes t oday we were chatting among ourselves and I’m not sure we go to many places that are better than this. I think it is an amazing course, tests every part of you.”

Canter had the chance to claim his maiden win in last year’s BMW Championship at Wentworth, where he finished i n a tie for second, one shot behind Billy Horschel.

A birdie on either of the last two holes would have forced a play-off, but the 32-year-old from Bath thinned a chip from just short of the green on the 17th and narrowly missed from 15ft on the 18th.

Canter’s best result so far this season is a tie for 12th in the Qatar Masters, but he hopes renewed confidence in his driving will lead to even better showings going forward.

“Driving is a big part of how I play well,” Canter said. “Just slowly getting a little confidence going with the top end of my bag will help me in taking a few things on, because it is about freeing up and trying to play as well as you can. That i s going to carry you t o some success.”
