Two-round title win for Kean

- BY JAMES MASSON

DUNDEE professional boxer Paul Kean is the new IBO (International Boxing Organisation) Continental middleweight champion after he scored a stunning second-round stoppage success against Nigerian Sulaimon Olagbade at the city’s Caird Hall.

Roared on by an enthusiastic 1,100-strong crowd, Paul took the contest to his opponent, dominating the first round with southpaw lead right hands that struck Olagbade at will.

The second round saw the pattern repeated then Paul unleashed a devastating left uppercut which sunk Olagbade to the floor.

Referee Howard Foster let the bout go on after a count of eight but, after a flurry of further blows from Paul, he signalled the end after two minutes 48 seconds of round two.

Paul’s manager, Perth’s Sam Kynoch, described the result as “amazing”.

Paul came to the ring with a 14 wins two losses record, with Olagbade entering the contest with a nine victories one defeat record with seven of these wins being inside the distance, his last success being a first-round knockout.

This was the first professional show to be held in Dundee for a few years and it proved successful also for three other local boxers.

Jamie Wilson, competing at super-bantamweight, scored a 39-37 points verdict over Manchester’s Stephen Jackson; Dundee welter Ryan Gall recorded a 40-37 verdict against Glasgow’s Gary McGuire; and Arbroath’s Haydn Hill won on a 40-36 scorecard against Carlisle boxer Jake Osgood.
