‘Terrifying’ – car torched in the street

- BY JAMES SIMPSON

RESIDENTS say they have been left “terrified” after a car was torched on a Dundee street.

Two people were seen running off after the silver Audi Q2 Sport was set alight on St Kilda Road in St Mary’s yesterday morning.

Locals have told how there has been a police presence throughout much of the day as an investigation is launched into the blaze.

The owners of the vehicle were unavailable for comment but one resident says she heard two “loud bangs” around the time.

The woman, who asked not to be identified, said: “It was terrifying to see what was going on.

“We’ve been told two people have been captured on CCTV running from the area.

“Not only did they target the car, they’ve also smashed a window at a house.

“After the fire service left the scene a police car remained outside.

“CID and forensics have been back in the area.

“It is horrendous that someone has done this.”

One man living near to the junction with St Boswells Terrace said: “The police came and chapped on our door just after 3am to ask if we’d heard anything.

“There must have been 10 coppers in the street and the road was blocked off from St Boswells Terrace.

“We saw the forensics at the scene later in the day.”

The fire service confirmed it sent one appliance to the scene.

Police Scotland says the fire is being treated as suspicious.

A spokesperson said: “At around 3am on Thursday, police were made aware a car had been deliberately set on fire on St Kilda Road.

“Inquiries carried out so far have established that two people, both dressed in dark clothing, were seen running from the vehicle. Officers will be checking any relevant CCTV footage from in and around the area for any additional information on the suspects.

“Anyone with information regarding the incident or the suspects is asked to call Police Scotland via 101, quoting incident number 0308 of May 12.

“Alternatively, please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be given anonymously.”
