Falconer reveals Rep debut for his musical

- BY HANNAH BALLANTYNE

THE View singer Kyle Falconer has revealed plans for a musical, that will make its debut at Dundee Rep theatre.

The show has been written by the musician’s partner Laura Wilde, along with writer and director Johnny McKnight.

It will feature songs from his second solo album, No Love Songs For Laura, and is inspired by the “real-life experiences” of the couple.

The musical will touch on a range of issues, including postnatal depression.

And fans have a chance to hear the production in its fledgling stages when Falconer performs a “stripped back” version of the show in June for the Rep’s Red Stripped festival, which showcases new ideas and experimental work in the early stages of development from a range of artists and creatives.

In a post on social media, Falconer said: “Over the moon to finally announce @wildayz and I’s musical ‘No Love Songs For Laura’ alongside the wonderful Johnny McKnight.

“It will first be shown at Dundee Rep for their ‘Rep Stripped’ festival.

“It’s a chance to see the musical at the very beginning of its development, a strippedback performance in gig-style theatre.

“This has been something Laura and I have been talking about doing for years, so we are really excited to work alongside an amazing team at the Dundee Rep.”

Falconer has previously spoken frankly about how he ditched the chaotic lifestyle that came with being a rock star to become a family man with Laura, with whom he has two children.

No Love Songs For Laura was partly inspired by the pressures his relationship faced due to his touring commitments.

The family moved briefly to Los Angeles to spend more time together, but moved back to Scotland as the pandemic spread across the world.

He now lives with his family in Broughty Ferry.

In an interview with DC Thomson in July last year, as No Love Songs For Laura was released, he described the album as “being like a concept album, all about what was going on at the time and the struggles of me being away and touring all the time.”

“The whole thing is kind of a story,” he said.

“As in kind of what’s been happening in the past few years and what’s happening in my life and everything.”

Earlier this month it was revealed The View had returned to the studio for the first time in seven years – apparently to work on a new album.
