Bluebells book cup final spot with super display

- BY JUNICUS

LOCHEE United will have to wait until tomorrow before they find out who they will be playing in next Saturday’s Thorntons Property Cup final.

While the Bluebells eased through to the final after thrashing Arbroath Vics 6-0, the other semi-final between Kirrie Thistle and Downfield was abandoned with minutes remaining after a serious leg injury to Downfield’s Gordon Norrie.

Lochee broke through the Vics defence after 15 minutes, which allowed Kevin Milne to give them the lead.

They found it difficult to add to their lead in the first half as the Arbroath defence stood firm, but that all changed after the break as the visitors fell apart and the Bluebells rattled in another five goals.

Danny Cavanagh doubled the lead in 65 minutes and, minutes later, Kerr Hay made it three.

Then in a frantic finish the visitors defence cracked again when Luke Graham made it four and an own goal and another from Cavanagh saw George Shields’ side safely through to the final.

Kirrie Thistle took the lead against Downfield on 40 minutes through Robbie Gallacher, but the Spiders hit back with an equaliser from Shaka Roy in 65 minutes.

The tie looked like heading for a penalty shoot-out until the unfortunate incident with Norrie five minutes from time. An ambulance was called to the ground and the Downfield man was taken to hospital with a suspected fractured leg.

East Craigie will have to do without top scorer Grady McGrath next season after the striker, who scored more than 70 goals this season for the Shipbuilders, signed a two-year deal with Highland League side Brechin City.
