- BY JAMES SIMPSON

A MAN has died after a fire in a flat at a retirement housing development in Dundee.

Emergency services were called to Bonnethill Gardens on Caldrum Terrace, in the Hilltown area, shortly before 8pm on Wednesday.

A 64-year-old man was taken to hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

A joint investigation has been launched by Police Scotland and the fire service to confirm the cause of the blaze – though there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.

The housing is run by charity Bield, with a spokeswoman saying: “We can confirm that last night there was a fire at our Bonnethill Gardens development in Dundee which has resulted in one fatality. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy.

“Our condolences go out to the man’s family, friends and loved ones, including all of those who knew him at the development.

“This is a traumatic incident for customers and staff, whose welfare is a priority and we will be providing support to anyone who may have been affected.

“We are co-operating fully with the police and fire service to investigate the incident, but at this stage it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

One resident said there was a large emergency service response on the street shortly before 8pm.

He said: “There were four fire engines at one point and three ambulances.

“Someone was taken away in the ambulance and it looked serious, whatever had happened.”

Another man who lives nearby said: “When I saw the volume of fire crews and paramedics I did fear the worst.

“My thoughts go out to that man’s family at this time.

“I’d imagine the other residents will be shaken by this incident.”

All day yesterday, police – including forensics officers – were seen visiting the property.

A police spokesman said: “Officers were called to a report of a fire at Bonnethill Gardens at around 8.50pm on Wednesday.

“A 64-year-old man was taken to hospital but died a short time later.

“There do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 7.42pm on Wednesday to reports of a fire in a ground-floor flat at Bonnethill Gardens, Caldrum Terrace, Dundee.

“Operations control mobilised four appliances to the scene.”
