City centre brawl captured on video

SHOCKING video footage has captured a huge fight which broke out in Dundee city centre.

More than 30 teenagers became embroiled in “scary” scenes, with boys and girls throwing punches near the McManus on Wednesday night.

A 26-second clip taken near Albert Square captured a mob fighting at around 9pm.

Police Scotland confirmed they received a report of a “large-scale youth disturbance”, but there was no fight upon their arrival.

It comes after police patrols were ramped up following a spike in antisocial behaviour in the city centre.

One anonymous city centre worker who witnessed the fight said the crowd swelled in numbers just before a rammy ensued.

He said anti-social incidents of this nature had been “bubbling under the surface” for weeks prior to the brawl.

He said: “You could tell something was away to happen as the crowd of teenagers got bigger and bigger.

“I estimated there was nearly 40 teenagers there, aged between 14 and 16. It appeared two girls started fighting first before several guys started throwing punches as well.

“The rest of the pack followed the action as it went towards the direction of the Hilltown. I’m not surprised as this sort of anti-social behaviour has been bubbling under the surface for the last few months.

“I think most folk would have said these scenes were scary and intimidating.”

He added: “It was still fairly busy with folk at that time of night.

“This type of stuff has become commonplace but I was surprised by the numbers involved.

“Police did arrive on the scene, but when they arrived, the group had heavily reduced in numbers and there was only a dozen of them left.”

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “At around 10.05pm on Wednesday, police were called to a report of a large-scale youth disturbance on Reform Street, Dundee.”

She added that there was no disturbance on police arrival and no reports of anyone injured.

The fight began in the city centre.
