Cavanagh sets Lochee on the way to win at Gowfers

- BY JUNICUS

WITH Carnoustie, North End and Downfield all dropping points there are now no teams in the league with perfect records after four matches.

Lochee United reserved their best performance of the season so far for Wednesday with a well deserved 2-0 victory over the previously undefeated Carnoustie.

It was goalless in a tight first half but seven minutes after the restart Danny Cavanagh made the breakthrough. Any hopes the Gowfers had of salvaging something from the game disappeared when Josh McConville clinched the points for the Bluebells with three minutes to go.

The win will be a big confidence booster for Lochee as they await the visit of East Craigie, while Carnoustie face another tester at North End.

The Dokens failed to maintain their 100% record when they were held to a goalless draw by Arbroath Vics.

East Craigie made a blistering start at Brechin Vics and were three up after 16 minutes. Jordan Conway opened the scoring after three minutes and a minute later Si Coventry doubled their lead.

Jamie Moran then added a third but despite dominating the rest of the game the Shipbuilders could not add to their total.

Craigie now head for Thomson Park to face a Lochee United side who will be cock a hoop after their big win over the Gowfers.

Tayport broke their duck with a comfortable 3-0 win over St James. The Fifers went ahead through Kieran Sturrock on 21 minutes and the same player doubled their advantage seven minutes later.

Jim Malone added a third two minutes into the second half.

The Fifers are on their travels again tomorrow with a trip to Strathmore Park to face Forfar WE, while St James play host to Violet.

Downfield suffered their first defeat of the season when visitors Kirrie Thistle scored a winner in time added on.

Kirrie went ahead through an own goal on 35 minutes but the Spiders hit back five minutes from the break then went ahead with 20 minutes to go. Kirrie came storming back with a penalty equaliser from Bryan Duell then Craig Batchelor snatched a winner two minutes into stoppage time.

The Spiders will be looking to get back to winning ways at Blairgowrie, while Kirrie face an away day at Brechin Vics.

Blairgowrie were 2-0 winners over Forfar United with both goals coming in the first half.

Matty Adam netted the opener on six minutes then Gary Axworthy added a second on 22 minutes.

United missed a chance to reduce the leeway in the second half when they were awarded a penalty but the spot-kick was saved by Cammy Johnstone.

Violet suffered their first defeat of the season – losing 2-0 at Whitton Park to Broughty Athletic. Brad Smith and Marty Allan got the goals.

With the leading sides all dropping points the Fed will aim to keep the pressure on with another win at home over Forfar United, while the Pansies will be hoping to get back on track at St James.

Harp picked up their first three-pointer of the season with a 2-0 win at Scone and the Beechwood side now face a free Saturday.

Carnoustie were favoured with a home draw in the Scottish Cup preliminary round. The Gowfers will face Hawick Royal Albert but Tayport and Lochee United both face away ties. The Fifers will face a Fife derby against Dundonald Bluebell while Lochee travel to Dalkeith Thistle.
