City centre cleaned up

- BY ALAN WILSON

A CITY centre community clean-up has taken place this week as part of Dundee’s ongoing Take Pride in Your City campaign.

It is part of an effort which aims to make a difference to Dundee’s neighbourhoods, parks and open spaces.

The three-day initiative saw council teams carry out additional works such as the removal of litter and debris, cleaning around bins and bus stops, as well as efforts to remove graffiti.

Local businesses have also been getting behind the scheme by acting as hubs for members of the public to borrow litter picking equipment from, while other businesses have been carrying out clean-up activities in and around the city centre area.

Climate, environment and biodiversity convener Heather Anderson said: “The community clean-up initiative is one of many initiatives under the banner of our Take Pride in Your City campaign which are helping to make a positive difference in neighbourhoods across the city.

“A collaborative approach is key to tackling issues such as litter, fly-tipping and graffiti. Council staff continue to work with the local community and make improvements based on direct feedback from the public and city centre stakeholders.

“The community clean-up is an excellent way for us all to work together to improve the condition and appearance of the city centre area.”

Fair work, economic growth and infrastructure convener Steven Rome said: “We are all keen to see Dundee city centre as an attractive destination and cleanliness and appearance play an important role in that.

“It has been great to see residents, businesses and organisations coming together as part of the clean-up initiative to make a difference. We will look to continue this success into the future in addition to the positive work that is carried out on a day-to-day basis in our city centre.

“We are in constant dialogue with retailers, businesses and residents in the area and are always looking for ways to make the city centre area as appealing a destination as possible for everyone.”

The community clean-up initiative has previously taken place in several areas of the city, with further clean-ups planned.

Information about upcoming community clean-ups is communicated directly with residents in the areas prior to taking place.
