Fed turn up the heat as Bluebells left idle

- BY JUNICUS

WITH Lochee United’s match at Forfar United postponed due to a frozen pitch, Broughty Athletic took the opportunity to go 11 points clear at the top of the Midlands League with a 6-3 win at Coupar Angus.

The Foxes had high hopes after winning their last two matches but the league leaders had a bit too much quality, particularly in their finishing, and ran out worthy winners.

Rory Faulkner bagged a double for the Fed with Jamie Reid, Darren Watson, Derryn Kesson and Fraser Matthews also hitting the back of the net, while the Foxes’ efforts were rewarded with strikes from Peacock, Gaffney and an own goal.

The Fed are in action again on Wednesday in a top-of-the-table showdown with Lochee United at Thomson Park.

The Bluebells may be 11 points behind but they do have three games in hand and a win for Dougie Cameron’s side would be a massive result.

On the other hand, should Broughty pick up three points it would make them even stronger favourites to go on and win the league.

Downfield kept in touch with the leaders with a 3-1 victory over Letham.

The Spiders led 2-0 at the interval thanks to a double from Liam McArtney and although the Perth outfit pulled a goal back, Sean Tucker clinched the points with Downfield’s third.

Carnoustie dodged a second successive defeat from Dundee St James when they came from behind to beat them 5-3.

The Gowfers took the lead through Ross

Fraser but the Fairfield side hit back through a Dylan Higgins penalty and a strike from Josh McLaughlin.

But the Gowfers upped a gear and after Fraser equalised they took control and scored three more through Dale Reid, Jay Yule and Pat Smith, with Robbie Irons cracking in a third for the hosts.

Dundee Violet picked up three useful points with a 2-1 win over Brechin Vics. Marty Adam and Jamie Cord were the Pansies’ marksmen with trialist Abbi Njie netting for Vics.

Tayport were in top form at Ogilvy Park and ran out 4-1 winners over Arbroath Vics.

Alex Balfour opened the scoring for the Fifers after two minutes but Vics levelled through Connor McFarlane.

Balfour went on to complete his hat-trick and Ethan Samson was the other Tayport marksman.

Lochee Harp continue to struggle as they suffered a 3-0 defeat at East Craigie.

The Shipbuilders were always in control and were rewarded with goals from Andy McDonald, Lee Cameron and Kai Flynn.

Blairgowrie were beaten 3-0 by Scone Thistle at Davie Park.

Paul Leask gave Thistle a half-time lead with Calum Black and Lewis Finnie on target in the second half.

Kirrie Thistle came from two down to beat 10-man Montrose Roselea 3-2.

Blair Stephen and Aulay Martin gave Roselea a first-half lead with Ben Starkey pulling one back before Roselea had Stephen ordered off.

Kirrie took full advantage when Starkey levelled and Liam Duell fired in Thistle’s winner.
