City mum fundraising for ‘life-changing’ bed
A DUNDEE mother is hoping to raise £10,000 for a “life-changing” bed for her disabled daughter.
Elise Robinson’s four-year-old daughter Cassie has cerebral palsy and Rett syndrome, a disorder that affects brain development and results in severe mental and physical disability.
After meeting Safespaces – a specialist in beds for complex needs – to work out what would be best for Cassie’s needs, Elise was quoted £9,888.28. This includes the bed and mattress, zip access, a nursing access panel, a frequent care access panel and installation.
Elise said the bed would be “lifehanging” for Cassie and would be suitable for the rest of her life.
The bed, the Cosyfit Hi-Lo with a memory foam mattress, would have extra padding and provide safety for the youngster as she would fall out a regular bed.
It could also be adjusted for height and have a hoist for Cassie, as she cannot walk or stand.
There would be zip access to medication panels, which is crucial as Cassie has seizures.
“It would be life-changing,” said Elise. “We’re looking at charities to fund it but we’re not getting anywhere with it.
“The local authority won’t help but said they would give us a supporting letter about why she needs the bed.”
A standard hospital bed would not be suitable for Cassie’s needs.
She added: “This is the one thing
she needs. Most of us can visit a bed shop, find a mattress we like in five minutes and you’re done. We can’t just walk in.”
The fundraiser has been launched by Naria Brown, a friend of Elise, who described it as “a gigantic amount for anyone to try and find”.
She told the Evening Telegraph: “We are hoping that the wonderful readers might be able to spare a few pounds to help this beautiful young lady.”
More than £1,400 has been donated so far. In 2022 Elise launched a fundraiser to raise £1,200 to buy a special “dream” bed and other equipment for the then two-year-old.
