Charity to launch project for older residents

-

A NEW sporting memories club will launch in Dundee.

After the success of Forthill Sporting Memories Club in Broughty Ferry earlier this year, the Sporting Memories charity will launch a new club at Menzieshill Community Hub on March 19.

Sporting Memories is a charity and social enterprise that helps older people to reminisce, replay and reconnect through the power of sport and physical activity.

The Menzieshill club will form one of more than 150 branches across the UK.

The club will support older sports fans, including those living with dementia, depression, or living in isolation and lonely circumstances, in and around the west end of Dundee by using the power of remembering and talking about sport alongside physical activity.

Organisers claim the club will be a great opportunity for local people to not only share their stories but to also partake in a weekly session that ignites old memories through photographs and quizzes as well as getting active. Tea, coffee and biscuits will also be provided at the social inclusion meetings.

Physical activity development officer at Leisure and Culture Dundee, Elaine Ross said: “I am delighted that we will be adding a Sporting Memories group for older people in our community.

“We believe that sport has the power to bring people together, to create positive memories, and deliver an increased sense of purpose and belonging as well as being physically active.”

Sporting Memories partnership manager Donna Mackey said: “With the Forthill Club now in full flow, the time is right to increase our presence at Menzieshill and we are looking forward to working again with Leisure and Culture in Dundee to make the club a success.”

The Menzieshill club will meet every Tuesday after their launch between 10.30am and noon.
