Derek, 66, is married to Debbie, whose uncle is Downfield and Osborne legend Bobby Barnes.

I asked him for a run-down of his own football career, and he replied: “I played in U-18 football for St Francis Boys Club, then U-27

Juveniles for Albion Rangers under Dave Pullar and Pud Hill.

“After Grey Lodge, it was on to Fintry Thistle, who were run by Tam Bremner and John Robinson. Then came spells with SS Peter & Paul, with the legendary Mitchell family in charge, and YMCA, who were managed by Graeme Irons and Tom Paterson.”

Derek attached some cuttings and photos. Unfortunately, some of them were too grainy to print. The league placings had shown

Grey Lodge at the top of the Angus AFA Division Three.

One of the Grey Lodge photos, above, from around 1979-80, was good enough to be featured, and was taken at what was then the University Grounds, off the Kingsway.

FROM THE ARCHIVES. In May 1970…

Young George Hill, the forward released last month by Dundee, has gone “down the road” to join United.

The son of George Sr, the former Dens Park stalwart, had a few offers to consider after his “free” was announced, but plumped for United.

Although George has joined United as a fulltime player, this doesn’t mean he will give up his apprenticeship as a quantity surveyor. He intends to complete his studies in his spare time and is currently sitting exams.

Like his father, George was with junior side Dundee North End. He is a winger but is equally at home at inside-forward.
