Evening Telegraph (First Edition)
Legacy club delivers football for all ages
WITH nominations open for the 23/24 Dundee Sports Awards, the Evening Telegraph is taking a look at some previous winners and what the accolade meant to them.
In the latest of our series, we look at the 22/23 Community Changing Lives award winners, Dundee West Community Trust.
Dundee West FC, founded in 1985, is an SFA Legacy Club which serves the Dundee north west area. It provides football for ages three to over-50 and is a club for all. Currently, it has over 500 players registered and plays home games between Charlotte Street and Baldragon Academy’s pitch.
Speaking about the club and winning the award, club development officer Tam Mccabe said: “Football is changing, and as much as it still gives everyone so much pleasure playing with friends and representing your club on a match day, it’s offering so much more value to a community.
“Dundee West is just one example of this, but as a community trust, we recognise the power of football and understand how much positive good it can contribute to young people, families and everyone connected to our community.
“We shared our story of engaging with over 1,500 participants every week that consists of football participation sessions, holiday camps, social inclusion projects in schools and general health and wellbeing initiatives.
“We want to continue our resource to make a difference to our local community and if that inspires other organisations, then even better.
“We are working closer than ever with our schools with the start of a brand-new Extra Time initiative that works with families to support them with free childcare around the school day and offers children the opportunity of some physical activity each day along with some breakfast and a hot meal.
“We have increased our girls’ and women’s pathway to over 200plus players, which is a new record for the club, and have five full-time staff members working day in and day out to drive the trust forward.”
The 23/24 Dundee Sports Awards, sponsored by Gym Rental Company, will take place on Saturday May 11 at the Apex Hotel.
The awards evening will pay tribute to the success of our elite sports clubs and athletes and schools on the same evening and celebrate clubs, schools and individuals that change lives through sport.
