Clubs lose red card appeals

-

CELTIC and Kilmarnock have both failed in their bids to have red cards for Yang Hyun-jun and Lewis Mayo respectively overturned.

Hoops midfielder Yang was sent off in Sunday’s Premiership match away to Hearts following a VAR review after initially being booked for catching Alex Cochrane with a high boot.

The Jambos went on to win the match 2-0 and Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers claimed afterwards the intervention of VAR John Beaton on the red card was “incredible” and insisted a yellow was sufficient punishment.

The Hoops, who were also upset by the award of the penalty that led to Hearts’ opening goal, confirmed on Monday they had appealed against Yang’s dismissal and added in a statement: “We have also written to the SFA to raise our serious concerns regarding the use of VAR and the decisions made within the match.”

Kilmarnock also lodged an appeal against the red card shown to defender Mayo for bringing down Dundee forward Scott Tiffoney in the 60th minute of their 2-2 draw at Dens Park on Saturday.

Their manager Derek McInnes said yesterday: “I still don’t see a foul from my player. I think there is a coming together of two players, I don’t see a foul.”

However, it emerged yesterday the appeals against the red cards for both Yang and Mayo had been thrown out by the Scottish Football Association following fasttrack tribunal hearings.

That means Yang – dismissed for “serious foul play” – is set to be suspended for Celtic’s next two matches at home to Livingston in the Scottish Cup and St Johnstone in the league.

Mayo will sit out Kilmarnock’s Scottish Cup trip to Aberdeen on Saturday.
