A GROUP of young carers in Dundee have unveiled a new mural.

Young Carers Voice, which is part of Dundee Carers Centre, partnered up with local artist Diane Selby and ScrapAntics to design the mural.

It was unveiled yesterday on the ground floor of the Wellgate Shopping Centre.

The opening was attended by education officer Fiona Low, convener and trustee with Dundee Carers Centre Alan Baird, Dundee Carers Centre trustee Carolyne Johnstone, Diane Selby, ScrapAntics manager Sandy Greene, ScrapAntics artist Elaine Maher, team manager of the Dundee Carers support team Helen Reid and Janet Malloy and Craig Patterson from the Wellgate Centre.

Young Carers Voice work with key decision makers and ensure that the voice of young carers are heard and acted upon.

Helen Reid, team manager of the Carers Support Team, said: “The mural is based on this year’s Young Carers Action Day theme, A Fair Future for Young Carers, and aims to symbolise the transformation, resilience and strength of young carers.

“Using a butterfly at the heart of the artwork, each Young Carers Voice member designed a different section of the wings to capture each of their unique differences. They wanted to highlight that fair futures means as well as recognising them as young carers, they are still individuals with their own wants and passions.

“Additionally, the mural is decorated with flowers from around the world, each representing the diverse backgrounds and stories of young carers”.

Sandy Greene said: “ScrapAntics are delighted to be part of this project.

“For us fairer futures for young carers means recognising the additional challenges that these young people face whilst celebrating their achievements, skills and tenacity.”

Local artist Diane Selby said: “The young people involved in this project have been an absolute dream to work with.

“They contributed so many wonderful ideas and have worked very hard, I am super proud of them for taking on the challenge of mural painting.”

Janet Malloy and Craig Patterson, from the Wellgate Centre, said: “The Wellgate is delighted to facilitate this amazing project and support Dundee Carers Centre and ScrapAntics on Young Carers Action Day.”
