Fed pay the penalty as Gowfers salvage draw

- BY JUNICUS

THERE’S no change at the top of the league table after the two matches involving the top three clubs ended in draws.

League leaders Broughty Athletic maintain their 14-point lead despite being held to a draw at Carnoustie while North End hit back twice to earn a draw with Lochee United.

Broughty went in at half-time at Laing Park 1-0 ahead thanks to a Derryn Kesson strike but the Gowfers hit back through a second-half penalty converted by Sam Simpson.

Lochee United were also ahead at the interval when Kerr Hay gave them the lead four minutes from half-time but former player Jamie Montgomery banged in an equaliser on 55 minutes.

The Bluebells were awarded a penalty and Hay converted the spot-kick to regain the lead on 69 minutes.

It looked like Lochee would hold out to narrow the gap on Broughty until Montgomery came back to haunt his old club with an equaliser two minutes into time added on.

Arbroath Vics got back on the winning trail with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Brechin Vics at Ogilvy Park.

Brechin had a great chance to break the deadlock on 37 minutes when they were awarded a penalty but Kieran Longmuir’s effort was saved by Steven Connor.

The hosts made them pay for the miss when

Corey McCulloch grabbed their winner on 78 minutes.

Lochee Harp are celebrating two wins in a row after their 2-1 victory over Letham.

All the goals came in the first half with Tosh netting both Harp goals and Andrew McKenzie replied for the Perth side.

Violet picked up three welcome points with a 2-0 win over Forfar United at Glenesk.

It was goalless at half-time then Paul McLaughlin broke the deadlock on 59 minutes and Kyle McMulkin sealed the points with a second on 84 minutes.

Forfar WE fought out a 1-1 draw at Strathmore Park. Moran gave the home side a 55th-minute lead but Roselea hit back eight minutes later with a Murray Smith equaliser.

Scone Thistle’s match against Coupar Angus was abandoned due to a serious injury to a Coupar Angus player. Coupar were leading 5-0 when the game was halted.

East Craigie are through to the semi final of the Quest Engineering Cup after a 2-0 win at Tayport.

The sides couldn’t be separated in a tight first half which ended goalless but Lee Cameron broke the deadlock to give the Shipbuilders the lead on 63 minutes and the Fifers’ cup hopes were extinguished when Robbie Norrie made it two seven minutes later.

There was no cup joy for Downfield however when they lost 1-0 at Buchanhaven Hearts with the north side’s winner coming from a penalty.
