Science Centre’s work placement scheme is right formula for kids
SCHOOL pupils have prepared for the world of work through placements at Dundee Science Centre.
Organised by Dundee City Council and funded by NCR, the placements saw S3 pupils from Craigie High, Braeview Academy and Harris Academy spend three days working across multiple departments.
They explored science communications, social media campaigns and barista training.
Pupils from Grove Academy, St Paul’s Academy, St John’s Academy, Baldragon Academy and Morgan Academy are also lined up for placements in the months ahead.
The centre was presented with a certificate by Scott Cameron, employer liaison officer at Developing the Young Workforce (Tay Cities), for signing up to the Young Person’s Guarantee.
The Scottish Government scheme is a commitment to connect all 16 to 24-yearolds to an opportunity as they prepare for the world of work.
Mr Cameron said: “Dundee Science Centre is a huge advocate for inspiring and aspiring young people for life beyond school, especially around STEM careers.
“Through this new work experience programme, pupils gain an invaluable opportunity and insight, helping them make informed decisions about their futures.”
Lorraine Lemon, head of business development at Dundee Science Centre, said: “It has been fantastic hosting these 30 pupils over the last couple of weeks.
“They have truly gained a new perspective on the diverse array of opportunities available here, discovering roles they might not have previously been aware of.
“They have also developed some transferable skills which they can refer to when they are building their CVs and applying for jobs, college or university.”
Stewart Hunter, children, families and communities convener at Dundee City Council, said: “Through these placements, they are much more likely to achieve a positive destination, whether it’s rewarding employment, college, or higher education.”
