Residents want traffic ‘rumbled’
RESIDENTS of Victoria Grange and Ashludie Grange developments, along with surrounding areas of Monifieth, have started a petition to have traffic calming “rumble strips” installed at the Ethiebeaton roundabout on the A90.
The residents raised concerns about the safety of the roundabout after, they claim, “countless road traffic accidents” whereby drivers coming from the Carnoustie and Arbroath side seemed to approach the roundabout too fast and have lost control.
The petition was raised after the Angus Area Traffic Co-ordination Group, which includes representatives from Bear Scotland, Angus Council and Police Scotland, rejected an application by the residents for rumble strips at the eastern approach to the roundabout.
As part of the application, two examples of recent road accidents at the spot have been highlighted, one where a car and a van collided, with the car ending up on top of the roundabout and the van tilting on its edge; and another where a car careered on to the roundabout, exited at the other side and ran up on to the footpath before crashing into the rock face.
Luckily no pedestrians were in the area at the time.
But despite the severity of those and other incidents, the traffic group are not minded to introduce the calming measures.
Victoria Grange resident Jonathan Creece says the concerns had been raised by other residents and he had picked up the baton last August following the second serious incident, firstly reporting his concerns to Bear Scotland, then to Angus Council and then the traffic co-ordination group.
However, following the group’s claim of spot checks and a site visit, he said it was agreed by the group there was not a significant road safety issue at the location and installation of rumble strips was not appropriate.
He said: “This is my second attempt at doing this.
“We have now raised the petition as they’re not speaking to anyone local about this. It’s all very well saying there are signs etc but they’ve got rumble strips at the approaches to Dundee from Perth at the Swallow roundabout and on the A90 at the approach to Arbroath.
“Hopefully the petition applies a wee bit of pressure.”
