Tributes to Restless Natives and Still Game star
THE Scots star of cult film Restless Natives has died suddenly aged 64.
Vincent Friell played the role of Will Bryce in the film which told the story of two men who rebel against their urban lifestyles and become modern-day highway men.
Friell, of Glasgow, had played roles in comedy Still Game and hit film The Angels’ Share.
But tributes have been paid after it emerged he had passed away unexpectedly on Sunday.
Friell starred as Craiglang property developer Chris in iconic series four finale Who’s the Daddy? alongside Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill.
The hilarious Still Game outing saw his character on a mission to rip down the fictional Clansman pub and replace it with houses.
However, in a shock twist, Jack, Victor and Winston reveal they each had an affair with Chris’ mum and could potentially be his father. And after some amateur detective work the OAPs discover that Pete the Jakey was the boy’s dad.
Chris decides not to demolish the pub, after learning of Pete’s love for the place, and renames it after his mum Jenny.
Friell played the role of Diane’s father in Trainspotting and starred in two episodes of Taggart.
He starred in Restless Natives in 1985.
Martin Compston and Gordon Smart named their Restless Natives podcast after the ’80s film.
BBC arts correspondent Pauline McLean wrote: “Sad to hear that Vincent Friell has died.
“He appeared in Trainspotting, River City, Taggart, The Angels’ Share, Still Game and Rab C Nesbitt but he’ll be best remembered for the comedy Restless Natives. Condolences to his family and friends.”
Former radio presenter Ronnie McGhie said: “I’m totally shocked to hear that Scottish actor Vincent Friell has passed away.
“He was in many programmes, but it’s his performance in the movie Restless Natives that he’ll be remembered for – a wonderful film.”
