Gordon in sweat over Euros call

-

HEARTS goalkeeper Craig Gordon admitted he is “nervous” as he waits to discover on Wednesday whether he will go to Euro 2024 with Scotland.

After fighting back from a year out with a double leg-break, the 41-year-old was one of four keepers named in the last squad in March, alongside club-mate Zander Clark, Norwich’s Angus Gunn and Motherwell’s Liam Kelly.

Gordon has generally been picked for Scotland duty whenever fit and was Steve Clarke’s undisputed No 1 prior to his injury in December 2022.

However, since he returned at the end of last year, he has been operating as Clark’s understudy at Hearts, meaning there is a genuine sense of uncertainty about whether he will be going to a second consecutive Euros.

Asked if he was nervous about the squad announcement, he said: “Yeah, sure. This would still be one of the highlights of my career to be part of a Scotland squad to go to a Euros.

“I am nervous. I don’t know what’s going to happen. I feel as if I’ve put the work in at training and feel ready. If I do get that call I’ll go there in a good state.

“I’ve physically done what I need to do to put myself in the right place, and outwith that it’s in the hands of others. I’ll just wait to see what happens.

“Most of the time when I’ve been playing, I knew I was going to be picked in the squad, so there’s not been many times where it’s come to a point like this where I wasn’t sure if I’d be in the squad.

“After the Rangers game (today) I’ll get a few days rest and then come Wednesday we’ll figure out where we go from there.

“Everything is on hold until I find out what the next month is going to look like.”
