Snapper Jim’s motor drive to World Cup

EVENING TIMES photographer Jim Hamilton, left, was preparing for the trip of his life in 1974 when he set out to drive to Germany to follow Scotland’s progress in that year’s World Cup competition.

Setting out on his road trip from the City Chambers, then Lord Provost William Gray turned the tables on our snapper by getting him to pose for a souvenir photograph.

Joining Jim on the journey was the kilted figure of Bob Paton. He had to get a berth on the trip because, as Scottish sales manager for Mercedez-Benz, he’d provided the wheels, a luxurious Merc sponsored by the SFA.

And despite appearances to the contrary, and much to Jim’s family’s relief, they were not joined by Miss Scotland Football Magazine, 18-year-old Christine Carlin, from Wishaw. She was only there to wave the intrepid pair off on their journey.
