MY three-year-old rat is walking with his head tilted to one side and in circles. What’s wrong?
ONE of the commonest health problems in rats is respiratory disease, which is commonly caused by a type of bacterium. The bacteria can spread to the middle ear and an infected rat can develop a head tilt and may lose their balance.
Another possible cause of a head tilt is a tumour in the brain, but this is less common.
Take your rat to your vet so a diagnosis can be made and any treatment started. To prevent respiratory disease, clean rats’ cages out regularly and house them on suitable bedding.
