I saw promise of 12-year-old Danny

- By BERT MITCHELL

JOHN BROWN has revealed that even as a 12-year-old he could see that Rangers’ promising teenage central defender, Danny Wilson, was going to make it into the first team.

Bomber was patrolling the Murray Park training fields at the time in his role as youth team gaffer, yet he could not help his attention straying to the stopper playing alongside the other Ibrox kids.

A man who starred alongside Gers central defensive greats like Terry Butcher and Richard Gough, and more than held his own, can spot talent at centreback a mile off.

Brown said: “Danny was in the age groups a couple down from the youths, but I remember thinking that boy will be a first-team player one day. It has just happened a bit quicker than I thought it would!

“But, even back then, Danny had all the hallmarks of a very promising young defender. He had poise and the type of pace that seemed to give him extra time on the ball and, of course, he could make a pass. The way he has adapted to the first team, even at European level, has only underlined the type of quality he possesses.

“So Danny has already shown he has the nerve and the composure to play at the very highest level and let noone down and he will only get better for that experience.

“On top of that, he has had the chance to learn alongside Davie Weir and that will be something that will stand him in good stead for the rest of his career.”

However, Bomber admits that Gers boss Walter Smith will have to use his star defensive prodigy carefully.

“No-one will know better than Walter that there will be times when Danny will have to be taken out of the firing line and rested from the first team, much like he did with John Fleck. At 17, Danny still has a fair bit of filling out to do, but that will come.

“It is just great to see another product of Murray Park coming through the ranks at a time when it is becoming very important for Rangers to produce their own.”
