Cottage haven for twilight years
sheltereD housing is not a new invention.
From 1938, south side pensioners could retire to the purpose-built surroundings of the Crookston Cottage homes.
Built around a central block, which provided dining rooms, social spaces and medical care, the grounds were filled with smart, Art Deco flats where older people could live independently.
Back in 1947, the concept of ‘inclusion’ wasn’t so well developed (our photographer, in the original caption to this picture, refers to the residents seen here as ‘inmates’).
even though the home was years ahead of its time, it didn’t last. the Crookston road complex was demolished in the 1980s and the land sold off for private housing.
