Police failed to check on missing man
RECOMMENDATIONS have been made to police over their handling of missing person reports after a review concluded officers delayed visiting the home of a man who was later found dead.
An investigation by the independent Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (Pirc) was launched after a 37-year-old man was discovered in his flat more than 24 hours after being reported missing by care staff on October 9, last year.
The man had been reported missing before, but was said to have always been found by police or returned home voluntarily within hours.
Police were asked by the commissioner to ensure staff, with particular reference to the sergeant, should receive appropriate training and guidance on missing person reports.
