Po­lice failed to check on miss­ing man

REC­OM­MEN­DA­TIONS have been made to po­lice over their han­dling of miss­ing per­son re­ports af­ter a re­view con­cluded of­fi­cers de­layed vis­it­ing the home of a man who was later found dead.

An in­ves­ti­ga­tion by the in­de­pen­dent Po­lice In­ves­ti­ga­tions and Re­view Com­mis­sioner (Pirc) was launched af­ter a 37-year-old man was dis­cov­ered in his flat more than 24 hours af­ter be­ing re­ported miss­ing by care staff on Oc­to­ber 9, last year.

The man had been re­ported miss­ing be­fore, but was said to have al­ways been found by po­lice or re­turned home vol­un­tar­ily within hours.

Po­lice were asked by the com­mis­sioner to en­sure staff, with par­tic­u­lar ref­er­ence to the sergeant, should re­ceive ap­pro­pri­ate train­ing and guid­ance on miss­ing per­son re­ports.
