Warning on house fires

Evening Times - - NEWS -

ALMOST 100 accidental house fires were recorded in Glasgow during last year’s festive season.

The latest statistics show that dozens of city homes were affected by fire over the Christmas and New Year period in 2018.

The statistics were recorded from December 10 last year to January 14 this year.

A total of 509 fires were recorded across Scotland with 93 in Glasgow.

The numbers further revealed that of the 91 people who sadly became a casualty of these fires, 37 were aged 60 or over – more than 40%.

The hard-hitting numbers were highlighted as the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service launched its winter safety campaign yesterday.

That campaign includes a national television advert that will highlight the dangers of cooking while under the influence of alcohol.

Typical causes for accidental house fires include higher use of heating and electrical appliances and the traditional use of candles.
