Retail tycoon dies aged 79
and Gerald grew the chain, alongside his wife Vera, to more than 130 stores across the UK.
At its peak, the stores boasted a turnover of £100million as it continued to grow in 1989. The pair sold the business in 1990 for £50m.
In November, last year, the original building that housed the flagship store on Argyle Street was torn down.
Gerald spent the last few years of his life in Bothwell Castle Care, a care home in Lanarkshire.
The Daily Record reported that the family’s spokesperson issued a statement: “They are requesting privacy at this time.”
