Funding for gymnastics club approved by council

-

FUNDING of almost £9000 has been awarded to an awardwinning gymnastics club in Robroyston, allowing them to purchase much needed new equipment.

The application for £8799 by Storm Gymnastics, who usually operate in Wallacewell Primary School, was granted by the Springburn/Robroyston area partnership recently.

It will allow the club, which has 250 members between the ages of two and 18-years-old, to resume lessons which have been suspended since March last year, in line with Covid restrictions.

Classes have previously been held within Wallacewell Primary School, with equipment stored within the school and shared with the school community.

A council officer said: “They are already up and running at Wallacewell Primary School but are unable to access that equipment as they can’t go into the school.

“The school community are making use of that kit, so they don’t want to move it.”

This grant would support the club to secure additional mobile equipment, and resume activities in an alternative local venue when restrictions allow while allowing the school community continued use of its existing equipment.

The club is exploring operating two venues in the long term to address its current waiting list of more than 100 young people.

Councillor Graham Campbell said: “Looking back through the funds from previous years we have purchased quite a lot of equipment which couldn’t be used last year.

“Could we compile an inventory of the equipment we have given to groups because that should guide us on whether to give it to another group.

“For this particular one, my only slight concern is where they will keep the equipment if they don’t have access to the school.”

The officer confirmed that the club had not provided these details in the application which was submitted in January.

Members agreed to grant the application.
