Murdered siblings’ memory to live on in new gravestone

- BY RUTH SUTER

ANEW gravestone has been erected for two children who were brutally murdered in a 1970s botched robbery in Govan.

Kind-hearted Glaswegians have raised more than £3500 to ensure the memory of siblings John and Irene McMonigle – aged just 13 and 12 when they were killed – lives on.

It was erected yesterday and the children’s sister, Libby, was left “in tears” and “unable to speak” after seeing a picture of her siblings’ new headstone.

Organiser of the fundraiser, Grace Quigley, said: “She was in tears this morning.

“She was unable to speak when I sent her the picture. She was just crying.

“It means that the whole family can go to remember the kids and grieve for them.

“It shows everyone that they are there and that we remember them.

“Everyone is saying that it has been a long time coming.

“I’m so proud of the community in Govan for coming together like this to give the kids the headstone that they deserve.

“I’m so thankful for everyone’s kind donations.”

Grace had originally aimed to raise £1500, however, donations more than doubled as kind-hearted Glaswegians from across the globe contributed to the cause that once rocked the whole city.

Grace added: “The community has really come together from all over the world to do this. People who remember the tragic murders have been donating from across the globe.

“We are over the moon.” John and Irene were beaten to death in their own home in 1976.

The monster behind the murder, Alex Millar, was ordered to be detained without limit of life at the High Court later that year.

He has remained in secure units ever since.

It means the whole family can grieve
