Arteta can’t wait for his return to Ibrox

- CHRIS JACK

MIKEL ARTETA can’t wait to savour the “incredible” Ibrox atmosphere once again as Arsenal get set to help Rangers mark their 150th anniversary.

The Premier League giants will make the trip to Glasgow on Saturday, July 17 for a friendly fixture as Rangers look towards their landmark celebration in 2022.

Arteta famously scored a late penalty as Alex McLeish’s side beat Dunfermline to win the Scottish Premier League title on the final day of the 2003 campaign and he is now set for a return to Ibrox.

The teams first played each other in 1933 in what was known as the “Game of Champions” and there was a long-standing relationship between the clubs thanks to the friendship of Bill Struth and Herbert Chapman.

Arteta said:

“We’re looking forward to travelling to Ibrox as part of our preparations for the 2021/22 season.

“I enjoyed two incredible seasons at Rangers and cannot wait to return to Glasgow and feel the incredible Ibrox atmosphere from the touchline.

“It will be a great pre-season test against Steven Gerrard’s reigning Scottish champions.

“We’re also proud to commemorate the long friendship between the two clubs by playing a part in their 150th anniversary celebrations.”
