‘Gaelic in Glasgow’ research launched

- BY LAUREN BROWNLIE

ASURVEY has been launched with the aim of gaining an up-to-date and deeper understanding of the Gaelic community in and around Glasgow.

The data gathered from “Gaelic in Glasgow” will support a sustainable future for Gaelic language and culture in the city and will help shape development initiatives that reflect the increasingly diverse nature of the community.

The survey, by Glasgow City Council (GCC) and the University of Glasgow, is aimed at individuals living in the city and surrounding areas who regularly access Gaelic activity – but also organisations that are based in Glasgow or which engage with Gaelic audiences.

Donna MacLean, GCC’s project officer, said: “Gaelic in Glasgow is continuing to thrive, with very healthy numbers attending Gaelic Medium Education, community learning expanding year on year and a lively social scene.

“The council is committed to assisting with the development and promotion of the language in the city and building on the successes of the last 10 years.

“We hope that this consultation process will allow us to further connect with the Glasgow Gaelic community to assist us in planning for future Gaelic development initiatives and highlight key priorities for our fourth Gaelic Language Plan from 2023 to 2027.

“Please take the time to complete the survey, regardless of your Gaelic ability. We want to hear from everyone who is connected to or has an interest in Gaelic language – your opinion matters, and we want to hear it.”

In addition to supporting development initiatives across the city, the survey results will also inform ongoing research considering support for minority language communities in urban settings.

It covers a range of subthemes from demographics and language proficiency to Gaelic education and broader cultural interests.

Respondents are being encouraged to complete the survey in line with their pre-Covid habits, but there is also a section to capture the impact of Covid-19 restrictions on the Gaelic community.

The consultation will be open for three weeks. To take part, go online to smartsurvey.co.uk/s/gaelicinglasgow/
