Scotland ratings
Substitutes DAVID MARSHALL
Pushed away an effort from Mason Mount as England emerged from the break and then palpitations in added time amidst a goalmouth melee.
ANDY ROBERTSON
Combined well with Tierney on the left. One important touch to whip the ball off the toe of Phil Foden but outstanding shift throughout the 90 minutes.
KIERAN TIERNEY
Almost teed up the opening goal. Worked his socks off with his run to set up O’Donnell’s chance indicative of his vision and energy throughout the game. Excellent.
GRANT HANLEY
Solid challenge on Marcus Rashford on the edge of the box going into the final stages of the game epitomised his display. Solid, hard-working and robust.
SCOTT McTOMINAY
Back in defence and got a slice of luck when his choice to dribble out from the back wasn’t punished in opening stages. Played his part in a strong defensive display.
STEPHEN O’DONNELL
Almost delivered the perfect two-finger riposte to his critics with a cracking first-half volley. Goal or not, can feel like he shut a few folk up with his display.
BILLY GILMOUR
Set up Scotland’s first chance of the night and put in a composed performance that belied his lack of experience. Rarely gave the ball away. Never looked out of his depth.
CALLUM McGREGOR
Back into the central pastures and another who gave everything to support the defensive while always trying to get the ball forward.
JOHN McGINN
First booking of the night and was still arguing his case as the teams headed into the break. Impressive shift after working tirelessly.
CHE ADAMS
First real chance with an effort blocked by John Stones but offered plenty up front. Unlucky with one second-half chance that seemed to spin off his ankle.
LYNDON DYKES
Wiped out Luke Shaw early with a firm challenge but slept when Stones battered the post with a free header. Second-half effort cleared off the line by Reece James.
Stuart Armstrong 5
(for Gilmour 77) Fresh legs just as Scotland needed them.
Kevin Nisbet 4
On as Scotland ran down the clock.
