It Ain’t Half Hot Mum: Melvyn Hayes and Wind­sor Davies. Those fa­mil­iar with the se­ries will re­mem­ber that Melvyn played Gun­ner/ Bom­bardier ‘ Glo­ria’ Beau­mont who de­tested be­ing in the Army, re­gard­ing him­self as a se­ri­ous “artiste” and a show­busi­ness pro­fes­sional. In the troupe’s shows and rou­tines he gen­er­ally ap­peared dressed up as fe­male film stars par­tic­u­larly Gin­ger Rogers.

Bom­bardier Beau­mont’s cow­ardly at­ti­tudes and ef­fem­i­nate be­hav­iour didn’t go down well with the larger- than- life char­ac­ter played by Wind­sor Davies, Bat­tery Sergeant Ma­jor Tu­dor Bryn Wil­liams. The mus­ta­chioed Welsh­man, with his puffed- out chest, was best known for his fierce fa­cial ex­pres­sions and loud, deep voice. “Oh dear, how sad, never mind,” was his sar­cas­tic catch­phrase, and he fre­quently bel­lowed “Shut up” at his poor re­cruits prompt­ing them to re­fer to him as “Old Shut Up”.
