St. asaph festival

Evergreen - - Summer 2016 - NORTHWICH, CHESHIRE. GWILI LEWIS,

MADAM: “Our Christian Heritage” ( Spring 2016) reminded me of William Mathias founder of the St. Asaph Cathedral music festival in 1972. He was a versatile musician born in the same little town as me, Whitland in Carmarthenshire.

His father taught history at the County School, Whitland, and his mother played the organ at the Tabernacle chapel in the town. Occasionally I went to their home to practise my solo for an eisteddfod. William took to playing the piano when he was three years of age, and started composing when he was five. Remarkable! —
