Evergreen - - Summer 2018 -

John Wilson comes from Geordieland and while still at school conducted a large orchestra and chorus for West Side Story, and also wrote his own pantomime. In recent years he has come to the fore with his own orchestra at the Proms. To keen music lovers, however, he has been on the melody map for many years, championing light music composers in general and Eric Coates in particular.

His enthusiasm for good music knows no bounds and he is much in demand as a conductor. He is also keen on restoring historical fi lms and is currently recreating original MGM musical scores which were destroyed 50 years ago. To watch his performances at the Proms is to sense his passion for fi ne musical entertainment so we take great pleasure in presenting him with our Good

Music Award. Keep up the good work, John!

The CD below is the last in a long line of nearly 270 in- house records and cassettes put together over more than 25 years by our recording engineer, Eric Holmes, all in conjunction with our music editor, Percy Bickerdyke. So, as Eric hangs up his needle and files away his record collection for the last time, we wish him a long and happy retirement. Yesterday’s Music was unique and in many cases featured tunes never previously commercially released. We shall miss you, Eric ( see pages 98- 99).
