Audi S3 Sportback

Can some longer journeys increase the love for our Audi?

- Richard Browne

MARCH 29TH 2021 FINALLY ARRIVED AND with it the long-awaited permission to visit friends and family once more. Luckily for me, mine is spread out across the country, meaning lots of excuses to at last allow our S3 to stretch its legs. Its first mission was quite a special one, too: a 107-mile trip to Maidenhead to pick up my daughter’s first car, a mint Citroën C1 that had been sitting on my father-in-law’s drive for the best part of six months.

The drive there provided several opportunities to show off the exhilarating bursts of power, noise and acceleration that the S3 is known for, my youngest comparing it to a ride at Alton Towers called ‘Rita’, my wife telling me to stop being silly. Nonetheless, it was a very enjoyable journey (for me, at least) that reinforced my love of cars of this size as alternatives to the lumbering SUVS that continue to invade our roads.

Later, back at home in Peterborough, I noticed that my daughter was missing, but peeking through the blinds I could see her sitting in her car in the driveway playing with the indicators and steering wheel with a look of pure happiness and excitement. It warmed the heart and reminded me of that feeling and connection we all make with cars. Granted the first is always special, but over the years that feeling can still be replicated, and I’ve had it with many of our Fast Fleet cars. But, If I’m being honest, I don’t think I’ve felt that with the S3 yet, which is odd, as I ought to love it – it’s the kind of car that ticks all my boxes.

Perhaps the strange times we’ve been living through haven’t helped my assessment. Hopefully with more family to visit and roads to explore my opinion can still be changed.
