Urban treats

-

Have you considered that the thrill of driving isn’t just confined to secluded, rural A and B-road blasts?

So many of your tests are conducted on such roads that I feel you may be missing out.

The urban environment is somewhere where we can have a bit of fun too. When you do, you realise it suits a particular kind of vehicle. Not the big, shouty expensive stuff, but something small, light, manoeuvrable, with plenty of torque… and a bit quieter.

A case in point: last night I was dispatched at 10pm across town to pick up the eldest. Hmm, what to take? The 911? Nah, 2001 Ford Puma bought for the princely sum of £325 a few years back.

What a hoot! I reckon the Ford was hands down quicker at every point of the route than the Porsche would have been. Over speed bumps and potholes, sneaking through traffic without peeing everyone off. Torquey little motor pulling hard from each set of traffic lights, snick-snicking up the tightly stacked gear ratios.

Would The Knowledge be reordered if group tests were all conducted in Urbanville? Maybe, maybe not. But surely the thrill of driving shouldn’t just be confined to Wales and Scotland and the Yorkshire moors? Let’s have some alternative group tests for the city dwellers. Possibly the performance EV’S natural environment? James Bowen
