Ferrari V8s
In the 22 years since the launch of the 360 Modena, Ferrari’s mid-engined V8 supercar has never breached the 1500kg barrier and the successors to the 458 have actually lost weight, with today’s F8 Tributo weighing just 45kg more than a 360.
Granted, the aluminium structure hasn’t evolved greatly, but increasing use of carbonfibre where possible and operating in a sector that can charge a higher price for lighter, more exotic materials has helped Ferrari keep the weight in check.
But in this time it has also retained a V8 engine and gained a pair of turbochargers and all the paraphernalia that goes with them. Carbonceramic brakes, forged wheels, and aluminium and composites for the body panels have all played a part in keeping the kerb weight low and the bhp/ton figure climbing in the right direction.
