Reality check

-

ARE EVO’S ROAD TESTERS FALLING OUT OF TOUCH WITH reality? Experienced journalists moaning about the excessive power, weight and lack of feel in modern cars, then devoting print to £300k restomod 911s and a £100k ‘modern’ original Mini.

They are right about weight and feel, but they are forgetting one important thing: for most people cars need to be the transport equivalent of a Swiss army knife. They need to be a daily, they need to sit in traffic on our congested roads, they need to be able to go on a school run, a shopping trip, a holiday, all whilst being comfortable, having the toys we expect, being safe and not harming the environment excessively. And on top of all that, on the odd occasion, when time, weather and traffic permits, they should also be fun.

So please, take a reality check and consider those poor unfortunate souls who have to actually buy a car or stretch their finance or PCP payments to get something modern from a large manufacturer, with a warranty and finance options. Either that or change evo’s tagline to ‘The thrill of driving (bespoke and classic cars)’, up the subscription to £50,000 per issue, limit it to 100 copies and aim it at the fortunate few. After all, this approach seems to be working well for so many of the brands whose cars you test…
