Past the peak
So the latest crop of supercars are too big, too heavy and have way too much horsepower? I’ve been getting subliminal messages to that effect through the pages of evo for some time now, and I couldn’t agree more.
Why are manufacturers hellbent on making even faster cars? I suspect they are not really for passionate enthusiasts like us. I’ve driven the recent GT3 RS and Aston Martin Vantage etc (not my cars, by the way) but they are an irrelevance because they are way too fast for the road, which makes them so frustrating.
Have we gone past the pinnacle of brilliant driver’s cars? Yes, I think we probably have. The absolute delicacy of a 993/996/997 Carrera or GT3 has sadly passed. There are others, of course: F355, 550 Maranello and many more.
I think if you’re in your 40s or 50-plus then maybe you feel comfortable with the past and our prime. Me? I love a simple recipe mostly, so what do I drive? A modified 997 C4S, semi-lightweight E-type coupe, a Rolls Shadow for wafting in and – try not to laugh – my latest purchase, a 1936 25/30 Rolls-royce [pictured above]. They are all polar opposites purposely, but serve up the great thrill of driving. Richard Skinner
