Track and field

-

Henry Catchpole kicked it off with his perfect line: ‘Some of the best driving fun you can have is with pretty much any car and an empty field with some straw bales or sticks or whatever the circuit equivalent of jumpers for goalposts is’. Then Adam Towler cracked it right out of the park: ‘The thorny truth always lingers in the background that in reality an old race car is going to be a more suitable, exciting track car than a £300,000 supercar.’

After your ‘Perfect 10’ issue (evo 291) I couldn’t come up with my 10 best road cars, but I’ve had some cracking drives in club level motorsport over three decades, mostly in sub-200hp Datsuns [see above]. In motorsport there are no speed limits, no campervans, there’s camaraderie and competition if you want it, and along the way, you’ll learn an awful lot more about

driving than you will tearing about on the public highway.

Long live the thrill of driving, but for the best results keep in mind that the track (or forest) is for racing on, the road is just for getting there.
