Magazine of dreams

-

Bill Bailey once described the Argos catalogue as the ‘laminated book of dreams’, and whilst I appreciate Casio watches and bargain-priced jewellery as much as the next person, my dreams are filled with significantly more expensive items: Ferraris through to Lamborghinis and maybe a Bugatti or two! So I would suggest to Bill that the real ‘book of dreams’ is the copy of evo magazine that arrives through my letterbox once a month. A place where many of the very best cars reviewed would need a lottery jackpot win to buy.

For this reason I have on occasion considered cancelling my subscription, as it became slightly depressing each month learning about cars that I’ll be lucky to even spot on the road, let alone drive or own. Yet cancel I do not, as even though I will never likely own any of the cars I drool over each month, thanks to your writers that I feel like I have in fact driven them.

I have bombed around Wales or through some Alpine mountain trail, the words and photos making the cars come alive to us mere mortals, and we can pictures ourselves driving them, tweaking the set-up, nodding in agreement that maybe the suspension is too firm/not firm enough, or that it could do with a tad more downforce. Because of evo ,I just know that a 911 GT3 would be top of my ‘Perfect 10’ list. Maybe an E30 M3 second, and throw in a Ferrari F40 while we’re at it.

So I’ll continue my subscription, safe in the knowledge that should I ever win the lottery I won’t waste even a minute in thinking about which cars to go out and buy.

It’s good to have dreams.
