Minority retort

ONE THE ONE HAND, THE GMA T.33 IS CONSUMMATELY lovely, a marvel of fine craft and engineering, impossible to not admire.

On the other hand… can’t anyone produce a one-ton supercar unless they charge £1.6-2.6million per unit? More and more these cars seem to serve an alien elite; so expensive and so low in number that the companies creating them verge on aristocratic coachbuilding clubs more than manufacturers.

We’re told through the usual channels that the T.33 is another significant vehicle – but how? There seems to be a fatigue to this dance now: another symbol of ludicrous wealth, and for me an increasing sense of unease at how at odds these Fabergé eggs of cars are with our personal experience.

This isn’t solely aimed at GMA, but Gordon proudly mentions low running costs, whilst seemingly being oblivious to how little this will register with anyone with spare millions at their disposal.

Gordon drives an Alpine A110 and lauds its brilliance, but perhaps he’s become detached from the real brilliance: the fact that it does 75 per cent of what his latest creation does, at 3 per cent the cost.
